A renowned clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst who values the relationships she has with her patients, and the difference she makes through philanthropic ventures, Ana Eugenia Ferreira, PhD has operated out of her private practice in New York City since 1985. In this capacity, she meets with patients in the office and conducts home visits when necessary, working late hours and spreading her compassion for others throughout Manhattan—prioritizing conversations with the homeless population and providing pro bono work to those who need it. In conjunction with her primary role, she has taught as a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at what is now the NYU Grossman School of Medicine from 1985 to 2009; been active as a psychotherapist at the University Health Center at Columbia University from 1997 to 2009; and served as the supervisor of psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis & Psychology from 1993 to 2010.
Prior to the establishment of her own practice, Dr. Ferreira, a native of Brazil, excelled through her school system and subsequently attained a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, with a minor in philosophy, from Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Italy in 1966 and a Master of Science in clinical psychology from Pontifical Catholic University in Brazil the following year, and then completed coursework at the Eckersley School of English in Oxford, England. She launched her career as an assistant professor at Pontifical Catholic University from 1974 to 1975, and was subsequently selected to conduct research on Alzheimer’s patients and their reversion to their maternal language at New York University—having an extensive knowledge in numerous languages, including Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English. It was at this point that she remained in the United States, ultimately becoming a visiting professor at Brigham Young University in Utah from 1979 to 1980 and a clinical psychologist at the Puerto Rican Association for Community Affairs Inc. in Bronx from 1981 to 1985.
A prolific writer and editor in the field, Dr. Ferreira authored “Parental Behavior in the United States and Brazil: Cross-Cultural Study” in 1979; co-edited “Personalidade e Psicoterapia Hoje (Personality and Psychotherapy Today)” and authored “Therapeutic Relations in the Psychoanalytic Modality” in 1983; co-edited “Psicologia do Ajustamento (Psychology of Adjustment)” in 1984; and authored “Tributo – Genealogical Study of a Family” in 2008, “O Legado de Luiza Belém Ferreira” in 2011, co-authored “Inês de Castro, Through Digital and Psychoanalytical Lenses, A Bilingual Analysis” in 2019, co-authored “Inês de Castro Sob o Prisma do Computador e da Psicanalise Uma Analise Bilingue” in 2022, and authored “Cross-Cultural Differences in the Manifestation of Transference Outside the Psychoanalytical Setting” in 2022. In recognition for her accomplishments, she has accrued a Teacher of the Year Award and two federal scholarships from the Brazilian government, and remains a proud member of Division 39 within the American Psychological Association, the Bellevue Psychiatric Society at New York University, and the William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Society.
Looking ahead toward the future, Dr. Ferreira, who also supports an orphanage in her home country, among other philanthropic work, intends to continue working and helping others.
